Digital Matter Oyster3 and Remora3 FAQ

FAQ for the Digital Matter Oyster3 and Remora3 device.

What is this device?

The Oyster3-4G and Remora3 are trackers manufactured by Digital Matter. It is supported in the Sensolus platform as a third party device. At the time of writing, all such devices have been resold by Sensolus (meaning that Sensolus has performed the registration in the platform, inserted the batteries, and put another label on the device.

Key to these device: it uses a combined NBIOT with LTE-M fallback communication. This can close a gap for customers where NBIOT coverage is not yet optimal in their region. The Oyster3 has only GPS (no bluetooth or Wi-Fi localization) which means it is only suitable for outdoor localization. The Remora3 has GPS and BLEwhich means it can also

Another difference with Sensolus trackers is these trackers are manufactured without batteries. The Oyster3-4G needs 3 AA Lithium batteries (which we, as Sensolus, have inserted). Also, there is no magnet interaction (nor is there any button interaction on the device). The Remora3 needs 2 D Cell Lithium Thionyl Chloride (LTC) batteries.

What do we support, how does the integration work?

The Sensolus platform receives GPS locations; and since the device has an accelerometer it has STOP and MOVING location types (so, journeys as well).

Remote settings can be pushed using a Sensolus profile. In the back-end, this means that settings are pushed to the device via an intermediate configuration server (called the 'OEMServer'). This is very similar to the Teltonika way of working. This secondary server is also used for firmware updates, by the way.

Note that we support the most important and common parameters to configure the device; possibly some exotic parameters cannot be set remotely. We also require to use the device in the mode that aligns most to Sensolus trackers, called the 'Jostle Trips' tracking mode.

Sensolus supports this device as a third-party device and we do NOT fully re-brand it. Hence, we do not full re-write the documentation and configuration. So, refer to the DM support website.

What is Jostle Trip mode?

First, read https://digmat.freshdesk.com/support/solutions/articles/16000130492-oyster3-tracking-modes. We require setting Jostle Trip mode, because this closely aligns with other Sensolus trackers. The accelerometer is used in this mode, and we have STOP and MOVING locations allowing to use the Journeys feature.

Firmware updates

Firmware can be pushed through the OEMServer (https://www.oemserver.com/). This requires a Sensolus username and password. Typically, only engineering will need to do this.

At the time of writing, the last shipment was using the 1.12 firmware version.
